Drum Mixer Overhaul in The Ogden Area
MJB Welding recently completed a critical project for Granite Construction at their West Haven, UT facility. The client identified significant wear within a 10-foot diameter asphalt drum mixer, impacting operational efficiency and posing a risk to the structural integrity of the equipment. Our objective was to restore the drum’s internal performance and extend its service life through a comprehensive re-lining process.
Technical Scope: Precision Wear Liner Installation
The project focused on the internal rehabilitation of the asphalt drum mixer. Our team performed the complete removal of existing, heavily worn interior plates. Following this preparatory phase, we undertook the precision welding of new, custom-fabricated abrasion-resistant (AR) steel wear liners. These liners are specifically engineered to withstand the high-impact forces and abrasive nature of aggregate materials common in asphalt production.
Process & Safety: Navigating Confined Space and Structural Integrity
Executing this project required navigating significant logistical and safety challenges. The primary task involved extensive arc welding performed within a confined-space environment. To ensure safe and efficient access to all internal surfaces, our crew erected substantial scaffolding. Adherence to strict industrial safety protocols was non-negotiable. This included comprehensive pre-task planning, hazard assessments, and the implementation of specialized confined-space safety procedures. Our welders are certified to AWS D1.1 standards, ensuring the highest quality welds. Precise alignment of the AR steel liners and flights was critical to prevent premature wear and ensure the drum’s rotational balance, preventing undue stress on bearings and drive components.
results: Restored Efficiency and Extended Equipment Lifespan
The successful completion of this asphalt drum mixer re-lining project delivered substantial value to Granite Construction. We effectively restored the drum’s heat transfer efficiency, a direct result of the new, smooth AR steel surfaces. This restoration is vital for consistent asphalt quality and production throughput. The installation of robust AR steel liners significantly extends the operational lifespan of the drum, protecting the outer shell from severe aggregate abrasion and preventing costly premature equipment failure. This project underscores our capability to deliver complex, high-integrity welding solutions that directly impact industrial production and asset longevity.
